Transforming a deck into a Grand Master Closet

2014-10-16 11.50.00   I love working on Addition/Renovation projects that not only solves an existing problem but turn into a wonderful focal point that make all the neighbors envious.  We recently completed one such project that transformed an unused wood deck off the back of a Master Bedroom into a Grand Master Closet that has become the favorite room in the house.

The Master Suite was originally designed with bedroom to the right with split His & Hers closets transitioning into the Bathroom.  This is a common layout among house plans but isn’t the most efficient in space and design.  This design flaw can be corrected on most plans before construction begins, but this home has been lived in for years and the clients decided they needed more space and also wanted to add a reading area into the Master Suite design.  In order to accomplish this, we ended up ripping out the closets all together, therefore opening up that entire area into what is now a wonderful reading area.  Fortunately, on the exterior bedroom wall was a small wood deck that was rarely used.  We tore down that exterior wall and transformed that unused deck into a grand closet large enough to double their previous storage space with a custom designed wood layout including shoe racks, long and short hanging areas, and sweater boxes.  But why stop there, some bonus features were added including a custom desk area, treadmill with TV and audio speakers, and the final detail of a full length mirror with gorgeous hanging crystal chandelier and double glass french doors.   Why would you want to leave, right?

Well, in order for the remaining Master suite not look outdone by the closet, a few upgrades were made to the bedroom by transforming the old tray ceiling that would have left the new space unbalanced, into a beautifully balanced and elegant coffer ceiling with a new fireplace as the focal point equipped for the new TV with surround sound.  All this was topped off with new light fixtures.

Hey, if we are going to have such a nice new bedroom and closet, we couldn’t just leave the old bathroom.  So we installed new custom cabinets, granite tops, and tile work adding a new beauty to the existing tub.  We installed a new, bigger, tile shower equipped with double shower heads and lots of niches and a linen closet for lots of storage.

Overall, the new Master Suite is now a grand space that offers a much for efficient layout while incorporating beautiful finishes that resulted into one of my favorite remodeling projects so far.

Johnston County 2014 Parade of Homes begins April 12th

April is here, and it’s time for Johnston County’s 2014 Parade of Homes. The Parade of Homes is a great way to showcase area builders by offering a month-long open house that offers prospective buyers the opportunity to look at homes from different price points, styles, and location. This year, our Parade entry is located at lot 51 in Portofino, subdvision in Clayton, NC.

Our Parade home this year features some of the newest trends in the building and design industry. Starting with an open floor plan that offers a downstairs Master suite as well as a flex room that could be used for a Study or additional downstairs guest bedroom. The Upstairs includes spacious Bedrooms with with walk-in closets plus, bonus room, and lots of storage plus room to grow with a 2000 s.f unfinished basement that gives families lots of options. The home includes stylish contemporary elements including a tiled fireplace, custom trim work, and stylish details in the chrome hardware, plumbing, and lighting fixtures. The Master suite features decorative ceilings, clawfoot tub and beautiful tile work. But it’s the kitchen that is the focal point with the stylish custom cabinetry featuring deep pot-and-pan drawers, pullout shelving, and a “rev-a-shelf” pantry system. The backsplash adds a contemporary twist from the traditional white subway tile by changing the color to a rich gray color and elongated the shape to a 3×12 textured finish that creates a dramatic backdrop for the gorgeous calcutta countertops.

We invite you to visit our 2014 Parade entry during the open house dates and times:

Joy’s Top 5 favorite things for 2013 (for New Homes)

Free standing tub by Victoria Albert

Free standing tub by Victoria Albert

Recently, I’ve been working on selections for our first spec in over 2 years.  I’m very excited about some newer trends that I can’t wait to implement in our Parade Home entry coming up in April.  Here are my favorite five things in the Building industry as we enter the new year.

1.  Free-standing tubs– Although not new to industry, free standing tubs have really   blossomed more recently and I believe will begin to replace the traditional whirlpool tubs in the upcoming year.  Free standing tubs are now more readily available and come in a variety of styles, finishes, and price points.  The “exposed” plumbing gives the tub character and function.

2. The color GRAY is my absolute favorite thing for this upcoming year.  And gray is not just for wall color, it will be seen in everything from cabinet finishes,  to hardwood finishes and everything in between.  Varying your gray tones from more taupe tones to more cool grays can still give you many decorating and accent options.  My favorite gray item is going to be to accent all my interior doors & fireplace trim with a dark charcoal gray while keeping walls, cabinets, and tiles varying shades of  more subtle gray tones.  Gorgeous!

3.  Chrome is back!  With all these beautiful gray tones available, chrome light and plumbing fixtures, door hardware, etc. blend beautifully while giving a more  modern flair.  This chrome pendant light is a great example of blending classic with modern appeal.  I predict chrome will  surpass the bronzier finishes in 2013.

4.  Several of the top Appliance manufacturers have attempted to come up with some new finishes to help support the new kitchen trends.  Whirlpool has a new line of Ice finishes that gives a more sleek look for white, black, and stainless.  My personal favorite is GE’s new slate finish that is a gorgeous matt gray but right now only comes in free standing  models.  I am hoping they will expand to all lines soon.

5. The blending of styles is going to be very popular this year especially in Kitchen and Bathrooms by combining a tradition style with a modern flair.  You will see this in Kitchens with white cabinets & traditional subway tiles combined with modern accents like door hardware & plumbing fixtures.  The possibilities are endless.

Be sure to check out all my favorite things in our Parade Home in April. Meanwhile, get a sneak peak on our Pinterest & Houzz sites.
